Your homepage has a few seconds to answer one question: is this for me? Most homepages fail not because the writing is bad, but because they talk about features when visitors are looking for outcomes.
Lead with the change, not the product
Visitors don’t buy features; they buy what those features make possible. “Automated scheduling” is a feature. “Never chase a meeting time again” is the change. Your headline should describe the second one.
Write for one reader
The clearest homepages sound like they were written for a single person. Pick your best customer, picture them landing on the page, and write directly to them. Everyone else who’s a good fit will recognise themselves too.
Headline. The outcome you deliver, in plain words.
Subhead. Who it’s for and how it works, in one sentence.
Proof. Logos, numbers or a short quote right below the fold.
Action. One clear next step, repeated through the page.
If a visitor has to work out what you do, they’ll usually decide not to bother.
Cut until it hurts
First drafts are always too long. I go through every line and ask whether a visitor would miss it. Most sections end up half the length — and twice as convincing.
Confidence beats cleverness
Wordplay is fun to write and easy to skim past. Clear, confident sentences convert better almost every time. Save the personality for the details: microcopy, captions and the occasional well-placed line.
Test it with real people
Before launch, show the homepage to someone who fits your audience for five seconds, then ask what you do. If they can’t answer, the copy isn’t finished yet.
