A fast site isn’t a technical luxury. Every extra second of loading costs attention, trust and, eventually, enquiries. The good news is that most speed comes from a handful of habits rather than clever engineering.
Images do most of the damage
On almost every slow site I audit, images are the main culprit. Huge photos uploaded straight from a camera, decorative backgrounds that weigh more than the rest of the page combined. Framer optimises a lot automatically, but it can’t fix a ten-megabyte upload.
Export at the size you need. Rarely wider than 2400px, even for full-bleed heroes.
Choose the right format. JPG or WebP for photos, SVG for icons and logos.
Lazy-load below the fold. Only the first screen needs to load immediately.
Be strict with fonts
Every weight and style is another file to download. I usually ship two families and three or four weights in total. If a design needs more than that, it’s often a sign the type system isn’t doing its job.
Speed is a design decision. It’s made in the first sketch, not the final audit.
Keep components lean
Reusable components keep a Framer site tidy, but heavy ones repeated forty times add up. I keep effects purposeful, avoid stacking blurred layers and test interactions on a mid-range phone, not just a new laptop.
Measure, don’t guess
Before launch every page goes through PageSpeed and a real device check. The goal isn’t a perfect score for its own sake — it’s a page that feels instant to the person reading it.
A habit, not a project
Speed slowly erodes as sites grow. The handover includes a short checklist so your team can keep new pages just as quick as the ones we launched.
