Type does more of your branding work than your logo ever will. Visitors see a logo once; they read your typeface on every line of every page. Choosing it well is less about taste and more about a few practical decisions made in the right order.
Decide what the type has to do
Before looking at a single font, I write down the jobs the type needs to do. Headlines that carry personality. Body copy that stays comfortable over long reads. Small labels and data that stay crisp at twelve pixels. One family rarely does all three perfectly, and that’s fine.
Pair for contrast, not variety
Good pairings work because the two fonts are clearly different — but different in one clear way. A sharp grotesk with a calm mono. A characterful serif with a neutral sans. When two fonts differ in everything, the page feels noisy; when they differ in nothing, the second font isn’t earning its place.
Display. Where the brand’s voice lives. Allowed to be bold, tight and expressive.
Text. Quiet, open and built for reading. Never the place to experiment.
Utility. Labels, numbers and metadata. Often a mono for rhythm and precision.
A good type system feels obvious once it’s finished. That’s how you know the decisions were made carefully.
Test with real content
Specimens lie. Every font looks good setting “The quick brown fox.” I test pairings on the client’s actual headlines, prices and long paragraphs, on a phone as well as a desktop, before anything is locked in.
Set up styles, not one-offs
Once the pairing works, it becomes a small set of named text styles in Framer. That’s what keeps the brand consistent long after launch, when your team is adding pages without me.
