The CMS is where a Framer site either stays healthy or slowly falls apart. A clear structure means your team can publish a new project or article in minutes. A messy one means every update needs a designer to fix the layout afterwards.
Model the content, not the page
Fields should describe what something is, not where it appears. “Summary” and “Cover image” age well. “Left column text” and “Hero image 2” don’t, because they break the moment the design changes.
Limit free-form fields
Rich text is flexible, which is exactly the problem. Where the design depends on a specific shape — a stat, a quote, a list of services — I use separate plain fields so the layout can’t be broken by a pasted paragraph.
Plain text for titles, labels and anything shown in cards.
Options or short text for categories, so filters stay consistent.
Rich text only for long-form content inside a template.
A good CMS makes the right thing easy and the wrong thing hard.
Write helpful defaults
Every collection gets sensible defaults and short field descriptions, so editors know how long a title should be and what size an image needs.
Hand over with a five-minute video
At launch I record a short walkthrough of adding an item. It answers most questions before they’re asked and keeps the site looking the way it did on day one.
