A grid is usually invisible. It sits behind the layout, quietly lining things up. On some sites I let it show — thin rules, numbered columns, consistent gutters — because a structure you can feel makes a page easier to read and harder to break.
Pick columns that match the content
Twelve columns is a habit, not a rule. A portfolio with large images and short captions often works better on four. Long-form writing might need a single comfortable measure with a narrow side column for notes. Start from what the content needs, then choose the grid.
Make spacing a system
Gutters, section padding and the gaps inside cards should come from one small scale. When every space is a multiple of the same base unit, the page settles down even before the content is final.
Visitors never count your columns, but they notice when something is two pixels out.
Let the grid bend at the edges
The best grids have deliberate exceptions: an image that bleeds off the side, a headline that spans the full width. Those moments only feel bold because everything else respects the structure.
Test it on a phone first
A grid that only works at desktop width isn’t a system. I check how every section collapses to one or two columns before committing to the desktop layout.
